At Mountain Laurel Montessori, we believe in the power of connection—to nature, to community, and to each other. Our story begins with a shared dream and two educators committed to making it a reality.
Our Journey
Caitlin Reusche and Alli Bizon first crossed paths over 13 years ago at the Urban Teacher Education Program at the University of Chicago, despite both being from the Philadelphia area. From the very beginning, we recognized in each other a shared passion for creating meaningful, developmentally appropriate learning
experiences for children. We come from the public Montessori sector, a space that has been innovative in reimagining what Montessori can look like for all, serving a diverse group of children from across the city. Our combined expertise as educators, advocates, and leaders has been shaped by years of teaching in diverse classrooms, partnering with families, and witnessing the transformative power of education.
When the pandemic changed the way children learned and played, we saw an opportunity to do something different. We realized the critical need for a space where children (and families) could reconnect with the natural world, explore their curiosities, and grow in an environment that honors their individuality. That’s when the vision for Mountain Laurel Montessori began to take root.
We are excited to rejoin the Philadelphia community and are eager to learn from the families and neighbors about what they want and need. While we bring expertise in education and Montessori practice, we are new to the neighborhood and look forward to listening, collaborating, and growing alongside our community.
Fun Facts About Us
Beyond our shared passion for education, we have some stories to share that make our partnership even more special:
We once road-tripped up the Pacific Coast Highway in the tiniest rental car, packed to the brim with camping equipment. Along the way, we explored Crater Lake, Olympic National Park, and Mount Rainier—an unforgettable adventure!
In 2023, we had the privilege of presenting at the American Montessori Society’s national conference in Boston. Our session, titled "Practical Life: An Essential Tool for Fostering a Democratic Community," highlighted the profound role of Montessori principles in shaping inclusive and collaborative environments.
As working mothers of two young children each, we’re navigating the joys and challenges of raising Montessori children at home, deepening our connection to the practices we advocate every day. We have even taught each other's children, too!
Our Values and Mission
At the heart of Mountain Laurel Montessori is our commitment to fostering joyful, meaningful learning experiences. We believe:
- Every child is capable and unique. We honor each child’s natural rhythm of development and their individual potential.
- Nature is a powerful teacher. Our program embraces outdoor learning and exploration as essential elements of education. Daily outdoor exploration and activities that immerse children in the local ecology. Outside everyday!
- Community matters. We strive to create a school that serves as a hub for families, connecting them with one another and with the greater Philadelphia community. Partnerships with public schools, local businesses, and organizations to build a supportive, connected network.
- Education can be equitable and inclusive. We are dedicated to making our program accessible and reflective of the diverse world we live in.
