It’s that time of year again! We are entering preschool enrollment season. Philadelphia is full of so many wonderful educational opportunities for children. You might feel overwhelmed when trying to decide which program is best for your child. We’ve prepared a simple guide to help you navigate the journey, outside of the typical questions about hours and tuition.
Location
Location! Location! Location! A common mantra of realtors and businesspeople alike. However, as a parent, this aspect of childcare can be crucial too, especially if you have somewhere to be by 9am!
When considering a school, consider these questions:
How long will my commute be to this location?
What time does school start? Is before-care offered?
How will this location affect sibling drop off?
Will we drive, take public transportation or bike?
A few years ago, I remember when my friend asked for the contact information for my son’s daycare after I raved about the care he received on a daily basis. I was surprised since she lived pretty far from the location. After she entered the address into Google Maps, she quickly realized that this daycare would not be a good choice for her family as it added an extra 40 minutes to her commute.
Program
There are several amazing preschool programs to consider in Philadelphia, ranging from Waldorf to Reggio to nature-based to play-based to Montessori. The options seem limitless…and maybe a bit overwhelming. Regardless of what type of program you are interested in, here are important questions to ask the directors:
What is your teaching philosophy?
If following a certain type of curriculum, like Montessori or Waldorf, are the teachers certified?
Is your program licensed? Are you enrolled in the Keystone Quality Stars program?
What is your approach to discipline/conflict resolution?
What do you love about teaching?
What does parent involvement look like at your school?
These questions will give you insight into the type of education your child will receive as well as the community you will be joining as a parent.
Affordability
Quality childcare can be expensive. As a school-owner and parent, I see both sides of the budget. Paying teachers a livable wage as well as providing an equitable and accessible tuition structure is a tall order. However, it is important to consider what will work for your family. When considering a school, ask yourself these questions:
What is my budget for my child’s education?
What is included in the tuition? Are there any other fees like for materials, field trips or the initial application?
Are there any discounts available? Oftentimes, schools will offer a small discount if you pay the entire amount upfront or if you are enrolling more than one child.
When are tuition payments due?
Is this a cooperative school? Can some of my tuition be exchanged for services?
Does this school accept the CCW subsidy or PHLPreK voucher?
Deciding on a preschool or daycare for your child is a big undertaking! We hope this guide offers more insight into your choice.

Location
We are located at 5261 Ridge Ave, which is serviced by bus lines 9 and 27. We are also a quick walk to the Wissahickon Septa station.
Our entrance makes dropping off your child an easy process. Whether you need to kiss and go or would like to stay for a bit, we can accommodate all types of morning schedules.
Program
Both of our teacher leaders have over 25 years of combined Montessori teaching experience. Alli and Caitlin are certified early childhood Montessori educators through the American Montessori Society. We regularly refine our practice by attending and presenting at both local and national Montessori conferences.
We do not hold any nature-based learning credentials at this time. However, we consider ourselves lifelong learners and are eager to learn more about this type of programming as we integrate it into our curriculum.
Affordability
The Teacher Leaders have worked hard to create a tiered tuition system that aims to serve all families interested in our school. Our application is free to fill out and our deposit goes towards your first month of tuition. We strive to offer a transparent process that allows both our school and families to thrive.
Best of luck on our school selection journey! We are here to answer any questions you may have!
